1. General information
With this subject the student completes their training in the field of stomatological prosthesis. After passing the subjects of prosthesis I, II and III, in which concepts of occlusion, removable prosthesis and fixed prosthesis have been taught , the student enters the field of prosthesis on implants, which is becoming more and more relevant in the prosthodontic treatments . It also puts into practice previously learned concepts and completes the training with mixed prosthesis. Finally, the student will face complex oral rehabilitation treatments using prostheses on patients.
The subject and its expected results respond to the following approaches and objectives:
- To diagnose, plan and perform overall multidisciplinary, sequential and integrated treatment of limited complexity in patients of all ages and conditions.
- Specifically, the dentist must be competent in establishing a diagnosis, prognosis and planning therapy. In particular, the dentist will be competent in the diagnosis of the different forms of partial and total edentulism , as well as in the planning of their rehabilitation treatment by means of different dental prostheses (fixed or removable, with and without implants). The dentist will also be competent in the diagnosis of temporomandibular disorders , bruxism and other parafunctional habits.
These approaches are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda United Nations, specifically, the planned learning activities will contribute to the achievement of Goal 3, Health and Well-Being ( https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/es/).
Recommendations for taking the subject
To take this subject, it is necessary to have previously passed the subjects Prosthesis I and II.
2. Learning results
In order to pass this subject, the students shall demonstrate they has acquired the following results:
- Identify the symptoms referred by the patient with orofacial pain, temporomandibular joint disorders, bruxism and other parafunctional habits.
- Evaluate, by means of clinical examination and the corresponding complementary tests, the signs of craniomandibular dysfunction.
- Adequately describe the signs and symptoms that will allow establishing a differential diagnosis and a presumptive diagnosis, as well as a treatment plan.
- Solve the diagnosed pathology by means of the pertinent prosthetic technique.
- Describe the stages of a rehabilitative treatment by means of mucosal-supported prosthesis or dental implants, in totally or partially edentulous patients.
- Distinguish all those situations that due to their complexity cannot be treated by the student and know how to refer them to the corresponding specialist.
- Adequately assess the patient's requirements in relation to the proposed treatment in order to meet their expectations.
- Specify, adapted to the patient's characteristics (e.g. age, socio-cultural level), the benefits and risks of the proposed therapeutic act in order to obtain consent.
- Elaborate an interconsultation document with the objective of obtaining the general medical information to be able to carry out the indicated treatment.
- Plan a work session in the dental office, according to the functions that belong to each type of professional (dentist, clinic assistant, administrative assistant).
- Establish the therapeutic sequence in case a multidisciplinary treatment is required. Identify and attend any dental emergency related to the field of prosthodontics.
- Prepare a monograph on one of the topics covered in the subject using the appropriate computer resources.
- Use scientific methodology in the analysis of biological systems and biomedical problems.
The subject will allow the student to:
- Take and interpret radiographs and other image-based procedures relevant to dental practice; - Obtain diagnostic models mounted on semi-adjustable articulator;
- Plan the most appropriate prosthodontic treatment for each patient;
- Convey to the patient the different therapeutic options, informing them of the different advantages and disadvantages of each of them
- Execute the treatment plan and know how to identify those situations for which multidisciplinary treatment will be required with specialist dentists.
- Follow up each patient and insist on preventive practices to maintain an optimal state of tissue health
- Resolve incidents that arise throughout the life of the treated patients.
3. Syllabus

Topic 1: Introduction to implantoprosthesis.
Topic 2: Implant systems.
Topic 3. Prosthetic attachments.
Topic 4: Biological and biomechanical concepts.
Topic 5: Analog and digital printing.
Topic 6: Implant-supported rehabilitation planning.
Topic 7: Implant-supported fixed prosthesis. Implant-supported restorations.
Topic 8: Dentoalveolar restorations.
Topic 9: Implant-supported removable prosthesis. Overdentures.
Topic 10: Computer design applied to implantoprosthetics.
Practical program
The students will perform the assistance work of the stomatological prosthesis clinic, under the supervision of the corresponding group teacher, carrying out the treatments that the clinic's agenda demands.
4. Academic activities
The learning process designed for this subject is based on the following:
Theoretical classes. The participatory master class will be used, since it is certainly very appropriate for the objectives of low cognitive level (such as information acquisition, comprehension, etc.). During the presentation, dialogue will be encouraged through questions, Problem Based Learning, doubt resolution, etc. The thematic presentations will be supported by diagrams and illustrations using Power Point presentations. In addition, seminars will be held in the form of theoretical-practical workshops given by the professor or guest speakers to explore topics of special interest.
Practical classes. They will be held at the Dental Clinic. At the end of the term, the student must present a portfolio produced during the realization of the different activities proposed. Attendance to practices and the presentation of the portfolio will be mandatory. They will be posted by the students in the ADD for later evaluation.
Tutoring. Dedicated to solve doubts or provide specific bibliography of a specific topic in relation to the theoretical or practical contents of the subject.
5. Assessment system
Students must demonstrate that they have achieved the intended learning results by means of the following assessment activities
1. Objective test of theoretical knowledge. Written exam divided in 2 parts: 30 multiple-choice questions with 5 items of which only one is correct (6 points); 1 essay question with an answer of one side of a sheet of paper (4 points). It will be necessary to get a minimum of 21 correct multiple-choice answers and to exceed 2 points in the development question in order to pass the exam (21 correct multiple-choice answers equals 3/6; 30 correct multiple-choice answers equals 6/6). It will correspond to 50% of the final grade.
2. Practical test: The practical work performed by the student in the clinic with patients will be evaluated (taking into account in addition to attendance, attitude and participation). It will correspond to 50% of the final grade.
In order to pass the subject, the student must pass the 2 tests independently.
GRADING SYSTEM:
The numerical grade will be expressed in accordance with the provisions of art. 5.2 of Royal Decree 1125/2003 of September 5, 2003 (BOE September 18, 2003), which establishes the European credit system and the grading system for official university degrees valid throughout the national territory.
Thus, the grades will be established in the following range: - From 0 to 4.9: Fail (S); 5.0 to 6.9: Pass (A); 7.0 to 8.9: Notable (N); from 9.0 to 10: Outstanding (SB). The “Honours” may be awarded to students who have obtained a grade equal to or higher than 9.0.
